Communications Info

In May of 2004 the Oak Grove Fire Protection District was awarded over $86,000 in federal funds through the 2004 FIRE Act Grant Program to upgrade and expand its radio system to provide and ensure firefighter safety. Prior to the 800mhz implementation the Oak Grove Fire Department utilized a VHF simplex radio channel that was not monitored by the Tulsa Public Safety Communications Office (Tulsa Fire Alarm Office). OGFD had migrated to the Tulsa Public Safety Communications Center after utilizing the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office for dispatching services from 2000-2003.  Prior to purchase of the existing radio infrastructure, the dispatching process with the Tulsa PSC occurred via alphanumeric pager with phone communication to confirm receiving the call and when all companies were back in service and in quarters.

Grant Funded Equipment

The 2004 FIRE Grant provided funding for:

  • Installation and purchase of mobile radios in all department apparatus as deemed necessary.
  • Purchase of portable radios, spare batteries and charging systems for fire department officers and apparatus.
  • Establishment of a cross-band repeater to provide VHF backup and “repeating” of the 800mhz Oak Grove Fire talkgroup.
  • Fire Station Alerting system that will provide light and sound warning of emergency calls as well as a printout of the incident assignment.

Our Radios

The City of Tulsa’s 800mhz Motorola Smartzone system provides the most safe and modern solution to the radio coverage and dispatching problems encountered by the Oak Grove Fire Department.  The radio system will allow for emergency button activation of units, dynamic regrouping of OGFD units to other mutual aid channels, interoperability between Tulsa, Catoosa and Broken Arrow fire departments, regional and statewide radio coverage.  Because several areas within the Oak Grove Fire Department’s response area are recognized as having poor radio reception, the cross-band repeater shall provide service as a necessary emergency backup to reach the Tulsa PSC if the 800mhz experience reception or transmission problems.  The crossband repeater works by looking for signals on the old VHF channel and ”repeating” those transmissions onto our 800mhz talkgroup.
