Our History
The area now protected by the Oak Grove Fire Protection District is not in any particular city and spans two counties in northeastern Oklahoma. The area used to house the Konklin School District and was part of rural Broken Arrow / Catoosa until the 1970s. The area has seen numerous residential developments and commercial properties now dot the countryside. Historically the area was protected by the Rolling Hills Fire Department, which is now located within the city limits of Catoosa, and partially protected by the Broken Arrow Fire Department.
In 1993 some citizens of the area recognized that long response times and large amounts of property loss in the Rogers and Wagoner County areas was not needed. Under Title 19 of the Oklahoma State Statutes, the citizens circulated a petition to form the “Oak Grove Fire Protection District”. Allen Farley, District 1 Wagoner County Commissioner at the time, was essential is providing assistance and political support to the new fire department. State Representative Larry Rice and State Senator Kevin Easley have also shown true dedication for the citizens in support the department through its fledgling years.
In early 1995 the fire department opened its doors to begin responding to calls. At that time the fire station consisted of two bays and four apparatus. 1995 and 1996 happened to be some of the largest grass fire seasons Oklahoma has ever seen and proved a true test of the department. The first fire chief was Jay Baker.
The station was expanded in 1998-1999 to provide three extra bays thanks to a grant from the Doctor’s Hospital Foundation. The current Engine 2 was purchased to provide extended coverage and versatility to the department and the department began the voyage to provide first class fire protection and emergency response service to its citizens.
Our Future
Present day Oak Grove is a far cry from the past, however we respect and appreciate the strides past firefighters and board members have made in making the department what it is today. It is the ultimate goal of the Oak Grove Fire Department to have a paid department, available 24/7 to provide protection for our citizens. Moving to this type of department will allow us to give an opportunity to our volunteers to reach career status, help decrease response times to incidents, as well as enhance station and equipment maintenance.
